Maha Ashtami

Maha Saptami is celebrating on day 7 of the 10-day long Durga Puja festival. Saptami means 7 in Sanskrit. This Hindu festival is celebrated all over India. It is also celebrated in other countries around the world where the Indian diaspora has settled. In India, the festival is celebrated with special fervor in the states of West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Odisha, and Sikkim.

Maha Saptami also has a legend surrounding Lord Rama associated with it. According to this legend, Lord Rama prayed to Goddess Durga before commencing his battle with the demon king Ravana, who had abducted his wife Sita. This special ‘puja’ had to be done with 100 blue lotus flowers called ‘Neel kamal’ but Lord Rama could only find 99 such flowers. In order to complete the ‘puja’ and out of his intense devotion to Goddess Durga, Lord Rama plucked out his own eye, which was blue, and offered it to the Goddess in place of the one missing blue lotus. 

Maha Navami

Maha Navami is the ninth day of the Navratri festival. It is the final day of worship before Vijaya Dashami, the end of Navratri. On this day, Goddess Durga is worshipped in different forms in different parts of the country.

The origin of the festival lies in the legendary battle between the Goddess Durga and the demon Mahishasura. This is also symbolic of the battle between good and evil that takes place in the world around us and also in the hearts and minds of human beings everywhere.

Maha Navami is considered to be the day during the long battle between the Goddess and the demon when she fatally wounded him. The following day, the 10th day of the battle, called Vijayadashami, is when the demon was finally vanquished by the Goddess. This is why, during Maha Navami celebrations, the Goddess Durga is worshipped in her avatar of Mahishasuramardhini, or ‘’She who killed the Mahishasura’’.
